Acknowledgments
I would like to thank the people of VW Brazil, São Paulo, and in particular Helio Casati, without whose support I would not have been able to complete Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Also thanks go to the other people of several other VW workshops throughout South America and Europe for their services and support. Thanks also to the other sponsors in São Paulo: namely; Firestone for tyres, Fram for filters, and Arteb for spotlights. Wallenius Lines of Sweden are also to be thanked for providing an excellent berth on board their ship, "Traviata", for a wonderful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
A special mention of thanks to my uncle Melle Haitsma for arranging a sponsorship from Theodorus Niemeyer B.V. of Groningen Holland, makers of Samson Tobacco. Also to the Dutch magazine, "Nieuwe Revu", of Amsterdam and "Geomundo", a Mexican magazine, for publishing articles of my journey. Several television and radio interviews in Mexico, Argentina and Australia were also shown and heard.
Preface
The objective of writing this book is to enlighten potential travellers that travelling with a campervan throughout the Americas, and further, is certainly possible, in spite of an interesting set of obstacles that challenge the adventurer.
Anyone can undertake this fantastic journey, but an adventurous spirit is necessary. The young, recently retired and all those in between can have an experience second to none. During my journey north to Alaska I met up with many people travelling in recreational vehicles and other camping vans. I also noticed, that once I had crossed the border into Mexico, these vehicles were no longer to be found. In fact, during the journey throughout South America, I came across only six campervans with foreign numberplates, driven by travellers. Most other travellers went with backpacks. Many had complaints relating to bus timetables, accommodations and restaurants. Most of these problems can be eliminated by travelling with your own van. Huge costs can be saved by camping in your own vehicle, making it an affordable trip.
Another objective of writing this book is to provide another quality photo-illustrated book for those people who would like to go; from the comfort of their lounge chairs, yet sitting cosily alongside a blazing fire! The armchair traveller will enjoy this journey tremendously and find that this book will become a valued addition to their library.
At a time of increased cooperation between all nations of the American continents, in terms of trade and economical treaties, it is further necessary to link up, not only geographically but also with a sense of complete cultural and historical awareness; to respect each others differences and to work together for the common good of all Americans.
A journey undertaken by Americans, and others, throughout the Americas from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, can only educate and bring about a greater sense of appreciation and satisfaction to those that travel this incredible trail.
